At times we are able to offer Studentships (financial stipends) for doctoral students whose research is conducted in affiliation with OCLW. These will be advertised on the Wolfson website when available and all applicants should apply to the University under the standard procedures for the DPhil degree. The University’s application procedures are described in the Graduate Application Guide.
The Oxford Centre for Life-Writing is a Research Centre, not a Faculty or a College. (Please click here for a basic explanation of the different responsibilities of the Colleges and the University Faculties.) We are based at Wolfson College and most closely affiliated to the Faculty of English, although we also have links with other Faculties too. But as a Research Centre, we do not offer any teaching, neither undergraduate nor postgraduate, at OCLW. We simply exist to support research at all levels.
If you are interested in studying life-writing as part of a course at the University of Oxford, you should review the course guides available on the University Admissions site and select a course for which to apply depending on your area of interest and level of study. It may be useful to note that in most years the Faculty of English offers a life writing module on its one year Master’s programme (MSt), depending on tutor availability. In addition to your studies, attending events at OCLW, and interacting with our members, will help to further your research. However, just to reiterate, we do not offer any teaching, beyond occasional short workshops designed to assist practising auto/biographers.
If you are interested in doing a doctorate (“DPhil”) at the University of Oxford in a subject related to life-writing, then you can do so “in affiliation with” OCLW. Your doctorate will be awarded by the University of Oxford, and your supervision will be organised by the appropriate Faculty. When making your choice of college, if you opt to list Wolfson and are offered a place here, then you can be affiliated to OCLW and benefit from a closer connection to our members and activities than “regular” members. For further information about studying at Wolfson, please see the Study Here section of the College website.
